IoT Inventing Lessons

Students gain hands-on experience and conduct experiments to learn how IOT is used in industry and Smart homes with real-world applications and coding.

Typical Projects include security systems, control of appliances, light controls, monitoring weather, and SMART device control.

Students setup networks, use cloud systems, create Apps for smart phones, and learn Python coding on the Raspberry Pi.

They apply algebra, geometry, and physical science concepts as they create algorithms which control electronic devices.

Raspberry Pi as a Control Device

GrovePi connects to a Raspberry Pi. Raspberry Pi is a small computer that can control robots, enable exploration of Internet of Things (IOT) and introduce Python programming. Plug in a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and it’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, with Internet and WIFI communication capability.

Raspberry Pi  has the ability to interact with electronic devices and has been used in a wide array of digital maker projects, from music machines and parent detectors to weather stations and tweeting birdhouses with infra-red cameras. It is being used by kids all over the world to learn to program and understand how computers and electronic devices work.

Student self-directed learning includes online lessons with 30 min activities, worksheets, videos, step by step instructions, handouts, enrichment exercises, engineering notebooks, and links to online resources.

The Grove System simplifies the process of wiring up sensors and various other electronic components by packaging each sensor/component into modules with a common interface to eliminate the need for complex breadboard wiring.

Using GrovePi+ connected to a web-connected Raspberry Pi gives students a plug and play experience for creating their own electronic masterpieces which can control a variety of things in homes or commercial applications over the Internet.

Lesson menu provides access to lessons with step-by-step instruction on Python coding on the Raspberry Pi.

Flexible Lessons

Fits a term or semester with 50+ hours of instruction available. The 20 lessons are 1 to 4 hours each and include optional enrichment exercises.

Videos teach coding and electronic concepts.

An open ended design and invent project is included which allows for flexibility in class time.

Plans are also provided for how to use the lessons in shorter class sessions, clubs, or maker spaces.

What is Internet of Things (IoT)?

“Simply put, IoT is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of.  This also applies to components of machines, for example a jet engine of an airplane or the drill of an oil rig. If it has an on and off switch then chances are it can be a part of the IoT.”
